Tamdhu Distillery Under New Ownership
Tamdhu Distillery Under New Ownership
New ownership of Tamdhu by Ian Macleod Distillers should swing production at Tamdhu into high gear. Tamdhu is rarely bottled as a single, but most recently was available in a no-age statement version that was about 8 years old. Its previous owner, Edrington Group sold most of its output for blending in Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark. Production of whisky was halted in 2010 although the maltings continued to be used to supply grain to other Edrington single malts such as The Macallan and Glenturret.
Tamdhu was founded in 1896 by a consortium of distillers, including William Grant, but was purchased by Highland Distillers when its Glenrothes distillery, nearby, was burned and most of the stock lost.

“I am also pleased that we will be securing and creating new local employment during these uncertain economic times. We are looking forward to developing the Tamdhu single malt following our successful growth of Glengoyne”.
Since purchasing Glengoyne distillery in 2003, Ian Macleod Distillers has more than doubled sales of Glengoyne Single Malt. Ian Macleod has built four additional maturation warehouses, capable of housing up to 5 million litres and has invested in the visitor experience with renovations and improvements increasing visitor numbers to nearly 50,000.
Tamdhu had its own maltings, which supplied their own needs for malted barley as well as some of the other Edrington Single Malts such as The Macallan and Glenturret. Edrington’s key brands are, The Famous Grouse, The Macallan, Brugal (Rum), Cutty Sark and Highland Park.”

Tamdhu will continue to provide single malt for blending in Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark.
Ian Macleod Distillers bottles under its own name, the Cheiftains range, the As We Get It cask strength bottlings, the Dun Bheagan Collection, Dunfife Blend, Glenshire Blend, Hedges and Butler Royal Deluxe Blend, Isle of Skye Blend, King Robert II Blend, Lang’s Supreme Blend, Marshal Blend, Queen’s Seal Blend, The Six Isles Blend, Moffat Springs Blend and Smokehead single malt, as well as Glengoyne and now Tamdhu. Macleod also bottles Gin, Vodka, Rum and Wine.
An importing relationship for the US is still being worked out for the Tamdhu single malts.
