Whisky Apps for Smartphones
Whisky Apps for Smartphones
Whisky a Go-Go! Or should I say Whisky on-the-go. Now you can access whisky advice from wherever you are.
Welcome to the world of Smart Phone Whisky apps. Now, for a price, you can have whisky experts at your fingertips. Not that any of these apps are terribly costly and one of the best is even FREE. How can you pass
that up?
Its still early days in the Smartphone revolution, but at this point there are only a few apps that have the depth to be considered good references for Scotch and Bourbon drinkers.

First we have iWhiskey, the app from F. Paul Pacult, well-respected writer of the Spirits Journal, available only on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, costing $11.

There is the Whisky Companion, which is $3.00 and is available only on the Android operating system.
Of the first three listed here, this probably has the least to offer but does have some good points. You can search distilleries by country, by regions, both inside and outside of Scotland, by name, or by an 11 category flavor profile. It also has a useful glossary of whisky terms, but where it is really lacking is that it has no tasting notes on particular whiskies, only general tasting profiles of the distillery. The notes it has on each distillery (numbers and sizes of stills and history) rival the review of information found in the annual Malt Whisky Yearbooks. For me though, or for the novice whisky buyer I think the main thing that is helpful in any guide is tasting notes of specific whiskies and, if possible prices. Here you may put in your own ratings and notes, but there is no “pro” advice.

iWhiskey is certainly the most robust of these apps. It has whiskies broken up into categories of Irish, Single Malt Scotch, American Canadian, Blends, World, Favorites, Most Expensive, and 5Star. It also lists the approximate price with the ratings and ABV of bottlings. With over 600 reviews and cocktail photos and recipes, this is the clear winner at this point. Plus Paul Pacult’s reputation in the whisky industry is very high.
If you’re looking for a whisky app to help you with your whisky buys, iWhisky and the WhiskyCast apps are definitely the best of this bunch.
