Scotch in a Can
Scotch in a Can
Several Media organizations are all atwitter over the news that Scottish Spirits Ltd. will be selling Scotch in a can in Panama. Scottish Spirits, Ltd. is a bulk whisky buyer and bottler, under its own labels. The canned whisky was launched last week.
It claims of its bottlings, “Our whisky is produced with real malt and bottled in engraved glass bottles which makes it a product with a distinctive form of packaging that's also outstanding in performance and quality. With more than 16 brands available and 1 million cases sold ( 70 cl case of 12 units), we offer these with labels printed in any language.
“The option of manufacturing under license is also available, save import taxes and excise taxes by bottling our whiskies in your country under the license of Scottish Spirits Ltd, very little equipment investment is required, we supply the raw material, the components and the know how.”
They even offer “the world’s first”Alcohol free whisky, called ArKay that they say, “tastes and looks exactly like traditional Scotch Whisky. It is suitable for drinking straight up or with soda, tea or other mixers. ArKay is the result of 10 years of research and development.”
Labeling irregularities have the Scotch Whisky Association threatening to ban the cans because they breach international labeling rules.
Whisky Expert, Jim Murray, who writes The Whisky Bible commented that, “...my biggest problem with the idea is that there’s no way of knowing what it is you’re buying – and this isn’t proper Scotch.
“I taste around 3,000 types a year and I can honestly say I have never come across these brands.”
Some of those brands are: Black Head, Morgan’s Cave Island Whisky, Red and Black, Black King and Golden Dollar. Among them are and 18 and a 12 year old and also a vatted or Blended Malt.
The canned whiskies are: Sir Edwin’s Blended Whisky and Scottish Spirits Whisky, also a blend.
Scottish Spirits say they have exported their, “whiskies around the world since 1896.”
